It is often used to collect FAQ entries from people, advices, and other collaboration. It could be easily used to collect USB IDs, even automatically, from a hotplugging script. Of course, an email-based system would work too. It only depends on working sendmail/postfix on a box, and that is a very big assumption ;-) With HTTP you instantly see if your update succeeded.
