I have just found a few other reports of the MS Intellimouse Explorer
Optical USB hanging the uhci driver in Linux:

So there's definitely something going on here. I don't know if the
problem is limited to that particular brand of mouse or not; the reports
are pretty sparse, and on the whole it seems to work very well, without
a glitch, for most people. I don't have another USB mouse to try out.
I don't know of any problems with this mouse under Windows.

I also don't know why the mouse takes out the keyboard when it goes
down, especially when they're plugged into their own USB ports. This
indicates some sort of lack of robustness in the HID stuff, right? If
the mouse is going to fail, surely only the mouse should stop working?

Thanks,
Luke.
