...tried "MAKEDEV update"... nothing!

I've recompiled the kernel removing USB support (and core-input).
I've rebooted the system. No usb. ok.
Then I have compiled (as module) the USB support.
Reloaded, reinstalled sane*. but nothing happens.
sane-find-scanner says (strace) NOENT when searching for /dev/scanner.
I have made a soft link to /dev/usb/scanner0 and now it says:
NODEV.
I tried to cat /dev/usb/scanner? but the answer is always "No such device".

What the hell is this ?? :-O
lsmod:
.....
mousedev 4180 0
input 3392 0 (autoclean) [mousedev]
pwcx 86784 0 (unused)
pwc 44008 0 [pwcx]
videodev 6112 0 [pwc]
scanner 10656 0
usbcore 69260 0 [pwc scanner]

I've added an usb mouse, but gpm can't find it (/dev/input/mice).

Everything I plug into the USB bus ...vanishes!

No hardware changes. The "target" hd was already visible (there was an NTFS
partition I used to mount in /mnt/backup)
The HW (scanner, etc.) works well (tried with another OS).
The camera works (I use it with gnomemeeting in another sid-box)
The mouse works (laptop usb-mouse, sid again)

Tried with and witout "Plug&Play OS" in the Bios.
Some days ago everything was ok, so the bios setting must be correct.

Uhm, I can't figure out what is going on.
Time for a fresh install ?

Your help is appreciated, any other info/hint is welcome.
Gabriele.
