As far as I can determine, Sony didn't publish anything remotely
resembling a manual for this machine; aside, of course, from
a quickstart pamphlet about how to point a click a few things
in Windows XP (entirely useless). I did get a lot of ads for
accessories as well.

I suppose that's a possibility. But, if so, it'd be amazing if I
wasn't given to opportunity to override this. 

Hmm..., you know, it *is* the usb jack nearest the power jack.
It could just be hardwired that way.

Anyway, I don't really think this answers Stephen's points about
irqs and about usb2.0 being disabled.
