Sorry, I spoke too soon. The situation is still not perfect.

If I 'unplug' the drive by pulling the power, then it works properly
in both cases. But if I unplug the drive by pulling the usb cable
*after* previously detecting the drive, then the driver fails to
recognise the drive in *either* case.

ie:

The following two cases work:

- Drive is off
- Drive usb cable is plugged in
- Module is loaded
- Drive power is plugged in

- Drive is off
- Drive usb cable is plugged in
- Module is unloaded
- Drive power is plugged in
- Module autoloads

The following two cases do not work:

- Drive is plugged in and detected
- Drive usb cable is unplugged
- Drive usb cable is replugged

- Drive is plugged in and detected
- Drive usb cable is unplugged
- Module is unloaded
- Drive usb cable is replugged.

Clearly, a drive that has been previously initialised does not respond the same
as one that's just
been powered on.
