There have been lots of reports from people about various things that 
don't work when a device is connected at bootup but do work when a device 
is connected later.  With some of them it turned out to be interference 
from the BIOS, but with most we have never been able to find the cause.

The problems never seem to affect the handful of developers who are in a 
good position to track them down and solve them...
