ah well it, the svgalib thing, was worth a try, no?
 
since there is really no need for a user to fiddle around with X once it's running 
properly
why don't you just put x in, solve any hiccups, and then just rip out all of the 
un-needed files?
doing this it's often possible to cut the ammount of disc space used by X by a huge %.

or is this a religous thing/odd hardware issue?
even if the latter,it's been my experience that there is still no need for user 
engagement once it's running ok.
