Thanks for the feedback guys. I really hope it's as simple as restoring my console.perms file to its former glory, though I admit to being a little skeptical, since it'd been working for the last few days without (obvious) problems. Is it likely that a change I made in that file would not cause a problem until several days later ? (Though having said that, I didn't sit and watch it boot up after the first time, so I may have missed something...)

I did try editing the console.perms file with Vim while in the shell, but I couldn't save the changes as the file was read-only, and I couldn't work out how to make it writable. Obviously something simple, but it was getting late and I was getting tired... I'll do some more research when I get home tonight, and maybe dig up a Knoppix CD as well <sings>A-hunting we will go, a-hunting we will go...</sings>

Btw, I've understood almost everything that's been suggested so far, and the rest I can probably guess. I spent a few hours last night Googling for answers, so I (hopefully) wouldn't look too dumb if I did have to ask for help :D

Many Thanks,
Dave

Gareth,

I wonder if the fact that Dave has only been using Linux for a month would
mean that your advice might be above his head.

Dave????

Oops, sorry, I didn't realise :-/ When someone posts an intelligently worded question, including relevant error messages and all the options they've tried so far, I just automatically assume they're not new without thinking ;-)

Dave, let us know how you go. If you need more specific help, post. Don't reformat yet :-)

Cheers,
Gareth
