Hi,
As a programmer, I do not object.
I have seen all the described processes in action.

Now, push it on topic for this list (linux being open source).

I have worked open and closed source.
Closed source tends to be more spaghetti like: there is no way you
will release code that makes you look bad to the world.

I have suggested to some programmers (closed and open) improvements to
their code. Most times I have been met with solid unthinking refusal.
With persistance, it is possible to convince people of a the merit
of change. It is not easy. Those that refuse point blank to accept
another viewpoint are instantly labelled (term deleted, no profanity
allowed)

The underlying problem for all programmers is that they want to get on
with the job, and get the product out there. Thus, code is written to
get the job done, and ignore the long term consequences.
This is sad, cause it means we get the consequences (faulty programs).

Which leads us back to linux.
Being open source, with literally millions of code reviewers and testers,
we do get good stable code from people who are not in the un-dynamics of
software development.

Derek.
