It does work, at least for my Sony camcorder (which also takes stills)

After connecting your camera, chk to see that the modules for  usbcore
and usb-storage  are loaded.  If not, load them.

You should then find you have a 'new'  scsi device.  Do a:

mount /dev/sd? -t vfat <mountpoint>

which may or may not work in your case.  I've only done this about twice
and I usually have to work through it each time but the above should
give you a bunch of things to try.

I agree..  an sxs would be a good thing to have.
