You could do that Ted, or you could just edit your httpd.conf to reflect the "new" document root - although, at this point editing your httpd.conf file makes more sense.
I'm going through a similar experience with PHPnuke myself, the logs show the pages are being served but the browser window is blank... and yes, I did add index.php to the DirectoryIndex directives. BTW, are you using Apache-2.0.x or Apache-1.3.x ??
