I have not deleted Takeconsole because according to my system there is no
/usr/X11/kdm and when I use locate it returns a NIL.

I also have, since I re-installed last night, an icon called Storage 1 with
the trident symbol for usb along side. Click on it and the file/dir /auto/sda
does not exist: So I did a mount :: mount -t msdos /dev/sda /carddisk, only
to be told that the system
mount: fs type msdos not supported by kernel

What!! what rubbish on an an initial install from cd, its always included!! I
checked the config and yep its selected but no msdos. So I have tried it as
monolithic and also as module but no msdos ??

The sound does not play still and the printer will not print either.

I am going to recompile 2.4.7 but do not think that will help, the last
kernel I used before dropping sybil was 2.4.3 might try that but!!
