Of which I know nothing. However, the impression I get out of usb is that 
they (usb) are attempting to short circuit sane by using V4L and other 
drivers. The usb camera and scanner detection is quite good, they have built 
up a very reasonable api against these devices, but I don't know of any front 
end to them other than V4l. Reading the scanner detection usb source code 
(name of which escapes me), serious thought has gone into providing a one 
shoe fits all, header file. This is promising.

These are just my ramblings, anyone needing a scanner to work now, today, on 
Linux, must use Sane and must (try) and use a scsi type. I don't want to 
mislead anyone into thinking there's anything else out there.
