OK, I've repeated the install with the -net option (su mode under
xfce) selecting install to /opt/Op...., and the install works like a
hitch.  After this, I exited from su, then executed the setup program
from /opt/Op...../program, and this too works like a hitch.  Starting
up soffice works just like before.

You must have something strange in your system setup.  I have glibc
2.2.4 (oo tells you) and a 2.4.10 kernel.  Maybe you should ask this
question on the oo list.
