I have a NEC Versa 2435 portable, P133 12GB, 40MB circa 1995-96
The BIOS only 'sees' 8.4GB hard drive, I have installed the following on this sytem at one point or another: (I like to 'test' things out here I guess) Caldera eServer 2.3 Caldera eDesktop 2.4 In COL2.3, I needed to immediately upgrade LILO for booting purposes related to the old BIOS and the large drive. I actually got to the part where LILO reads and uncompressed the initrd and the kernel, then the screen goes black and the systems appears to be hung or locked up (longest I ever waited was about 40 minutes) I tried getting grub and installing it, pretty much the same thing. Grub menu appears, I either wait or select the only option, the initrd and kernel stat to uncompress and then everything gets dark. COL2.4 acts like COL2.3 with grub installed. I get the boot menu, make my selection, and it appears to be reading in the kernel and then all goes black and locks up. Now, keep in mind that I installed from retail CD's, not burned images. The install and auto-detection in both cases went flawlessly and boots into linux after install. If I shut down this beast, I need to boot from one of the CD's, but then point to /dev/hda1 as the root filesystem. I use the whole disk for linux. I have at various attempts partitioned the drive off and installed a minimal set to a small partition that was 500MB, well under the 1027 cylinder issue, which I am not even sure applies to me anymore, but I was doing it anyway. Same thing, install goes great, but everything blows at boot time if I try to boot from the drive. Grub/LILO will load and start doing what they should be, get initrd and kernel loaded, and then lock up. I am currently using the COL2.3 CD to boot, typing in 'boot root=/dev/hda1' at the boot prompt. This boots just fine. The same kernel and initrd on my HD refuse to cooperate. Any ideas what I may try doing next? 40MB is the max memory for this beast, otherwise it would obviously have more. I'm trying to build a fresh kernel to see if that may help, but with a P133 and 40MB, I was hoping I'd get a few replies by the time this thing finished with make bzImage. _______________________________________________ Linux-users mailing list Archives, Digests, etc at http://linux.nf/mailman/listinfo/linux-users
