What version of Checkinstall? I'm wondering if it's a known issue that's 
been fixed. Current version is 1.5.0, released November 18th. The 
release notes don't mention anything explicitly, but not all changes 
make it to the release notes.

There's a mailing list now (created December 5). You didn't, by chance, 
mention the issue on there, did you?
