I would use 2.4.16 or 2.4.17.  Earlier than that, it's hit or miss whether
the kernel is any good or not (meaning that I can't keep them straight).
I just did 2.4.17 tonight and it worked fine, but I've heard of problems
compiling X and glibc against it.  I don't see anything in the LKML
archive to suggest avoiding 2.4.17.
