I would use 2.4.16 or 2.4.17. Earlier than that, it's hit or miss whether the kernel is any good or not (meaning that I can't keep them straight). I just did 2.4.17 tonight and it worked fine, but I've heard of problems compiling X and glibc against it. I don't see anything in the LKML archive to suggest avoiding 2.4.17.
