If this is your first kernel build, I wouldn't bite off more than you
can chew.  In other words, don't try to start adding all kinds of fancy
features, such as USB support until you are comfortable building a
kernel in the first place.  Sure, you might find it quite easy, and get
a fully functional, USB-enabled kernel on the first try, but you may
not, and trying to get USB working will just be another place to screw
up.

I'd recommend rebuilding the 2.2.12 kernel that you have so that it has
the same exact functionality that you're using now.  

If that goes well, then work on moving up to a 2.4.17 kernel.  Going
from 2.2.x to 2.4.x kernels is not very difficult, but its not a very
smooth process either, as *ALOT* of packages will need to be upgraded to
get a working 2.4.x kernel.  See /usr/src/linux/Documentation/Changes in
your 2.4.17 source tree for the minimum requirements.
