Thank you Steve,

for the facebook kicking to progress my geological knowledge -
Canterbury volcanics are definitively long extinct:

see *Pushing New Zealand's Boundaries*
<http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6Nyr78Mqyg&feature=related> - an NZ
land formation simulation by GNS Science.

But given that my Kaikoura prediction is proving correct (weekend slip
and yesterday quakes) what might people fairly expect?..

NewstalkZB reports a slip closing Summit Road (?) on Banks Peninsula
today - not our first lately.

Taking the two-year, South Island quake history into account, with the
GNS plate dynamic simulation in mind, and the cited shifts west (Dunedin
30cm in July 2009, and us 13cm on 4 Sept), the pressure expression in
Kaikoura now may suggest there would be significant movement on the
Alpine fault/s too, sooner rather than later. Everything east of the
Alps is trying to move south-west..

Preparedness is the simple key:

Torch & transistor next to bed, spare batteries ready at hand, water &
food supplies in house, gas stove stocked, warm & waterproof clothes
handy, good contact maintained with relatives, friends and neighbours,
emergency pet care prepared too, psychological resilience up, etc.

Here are my study notes: http://www.infohelp.co.nz/quake.html

Stay safe, all the best.
