I used to use Debian and I was glad Ubuntu came along. I use Kubuntu - but I have never had major problems with any of the upgrades or installs I have done. Well - apart from making mistakes backing up.

I should have another go with Debian I suppose - it can't be as bad as it used to be.

Define "it works". Spending half a day studying the 'net, then half an
hour editing a text file just to make X work which should "just work" is
a form of "works".

And in that file, a paragraph, useful things like "Set the vertical and horizontal refresh rates for your monitor. Warning - if you get these wrong, you could fry your monitor"

Encouraging. I also like the way it installed a mail server by default - but not a window system.

In other linux-related issues, my Nana still runs XP. Her sole use of
the computer is email via a web browser.

I switched my mother (80 odd) from her Mac to Kubuntu a couple of years ago. It was pretty painless - she uses mostly Thunderbird and Firefox, so not that different from what she used to use which was - er - Thunderbird and Firefox.
