OK...

Public IP or on your home / office network?

If you do 'host domainname' at the command prompt (or ping domainname if
you're on windows) does it return the right IP?

Can you telnet to the port? From the name? SFTP/SSH is not always a
straight forward protocol and sometimes client / application /
workstation config can get in the way, telnet to the IP and domain name
should get the same result.

Named based virtual hosting isn't a thing for SFTP, as it uses the SSH
daemon/server so if the DNS is working OK it should work...

If it's a public IP / DNS you could be up against TTL / propagation
issues.. Try sticking it in your hosts file..

If it's local on a Lan, stick it in the hosts file anyway. :-)

I know I said this before.. Look into wholesale web hosting, if you're
not able to get these basics working you're going to to be in for a
power of pain when (not if) the first time a site gets hacked on your
server(s). You can learn more about linux using someone else's system
and then move to managing your own servers as the business grows. At
least find someone to sit with you and help setting it up, you need to
know this stuff in your sleep if you're going run a hosting business...

Cheers, Chris H.
