Hello, I have the same monitor and I'm using Fedora 11 x86_64 with kernel 2.6.29.6-213.fc11.x86_64 I have the same problem since fedora 8 32bit if I remember well. The workaround was/is to rmmod and then modprobe again the uvcvideo kernel module. See below for example:
first detection: Jul 25 07:36:50 tekkaman kernel: usbcore: deregistering interface driver uvcvideo Jul 25 07:36:55 tekkaman kernel: uvcvideo: Found UVC 1.00 device Monitor Webcam (SP2208WFP) (05a9:2643) Jul 25 07:36:55 tekkaman kernel: uvcvideo: UVC non compliance - GET_DEF(PROBE) not supported. Enabling workaround. Jul 25 07:36:55 tekkaman kernel: uvcvideo: Failed to query (129) UVC probe control : -32 (exp. 26). Jul 25 07:36:55 tekkaman kernel: uvcvideo: Failed to initialize the device (-5). Jul 25 07:36:55 tekkaman kernel: usbcore: registered new interface driver uvcvideo Jul 25 07:36:55 tekkaman kernel: USB Video Class driver (v0.1.0) rmmod uvcvideo;modprobe uvcvideo Jul 25 07:37:21 tekkaman kernel: usbcore: deregistering interface driver uvcvideo Jul 25 07:37:23 tekkaman kernel: uvcvideo: Found UVC 1.00 device Monitor Webcam (SP2208WFP) (05a9:2643) Jul 25 07:37:24 tekkaman kernel: uvcvideo: UVC non compliance - GET_DEF(PROBE) not supported. Enabling workaround. I can see my webcam and the device is under /dev/video0 [r...@tekkaman ~]# ll /dev/video0 crw-rw----+ 1 root video 81, 0 2009-07-25 07:37 /dev/video0 and can use it under cheese or ekiga or skype. See thread https://lists.berlios.de/pipermail/linux-uvc-devel/2008-February/003076.html where Laurent answered about the reasons....
