I don't see any problem with your design. In fact I just wanted to be sure that this is an intentional change, rather than a typo error. So let's leave it in a way it is currently described by you. Just for the reference: in our implementation 0x80 bit showed direction of the message. Replies were generated with ^= 0x80. Another "FYI": when thinking about future-proof extensible protocol (which I never finished designing), I had 4 different types of messages: host-cmd, device-reply, device-event, host-reply.
