If P's experiment really worked, this will lead to the conclusion that they are actually using the same firmware on these devices, maybe with some minor fixpacks etc. or added support for the 3g while keeping support for the 2g. If it works at all, I guess it detects what kind of player it is running on and will behave like it is expected to.
