I tried to desolder the flash on the 3rd generation iPod a few hours ago, but
it didn't go very well... :-(

It seems that the ChipQuick desoldering alloy I tried to use doesn't work on
the solder used to attach the flash chip (it just ended up sticking to almost
everything else on the board) and the flash chip is also stuck onto the PCB
with some kind of adhesive. The flash chip got a bit too hot, and also suffered
some mechanical damage when trying to move it off the pads on the PCB. This was
likely due to the adhesive keeping it in place. :-(

I think the best way to attempt this again would be heating the board from
below (flash chip on top, rework gun on the bottom) until the solder melts and
the adhesive gives up it's hold. Hopefully this is before the chip gets too
hot...

Anyway, I only had a single iPod to work with, so I cannot try this again; at
least not until I have some more money to buy another iPod. Another possibility
would be someone being able to get undamaged 3rd gen iPod nano PCB's reasonably
cheaply...
