It would help to know which version of Ubuntu you are trying. The newer 
versions install from the Live CD, so I'm guessing that you have an older 
version.

There is a lighter version of Ubuntu for older systems called Xubuntu, it uses 
the xfce desktop instead of KDE or Gnome.

As a heads up, you should never pay for Ubuntu. They have a policy of shipping 
a free CD to anywhere in the world, free shipping too. Check the web site 
www.ubuntu.com. Shipit link on the right.
