On the Windows version of VMPlayer the "ethernet" connection has
different settings. Chose "Bridged" rather than "NAT". That way it is
"bridged" between Windows and Linux.
What I have not tried is my USB router. Windows works with a USB
router. Linux does not work with a USB router. But I have not tried it
for Linux inside Windows as a Virtual Machine
(I bought an ethernet router, through ebay, which can connect either
Windows or Linux)
