I had a similar problem after trying the wrong nvidia driver to work with compiz-fusion and could only get text mode. I used my Mepis live disk (PCLinuxOS may work as well, but MEPIS is very forgiving of permissions and I have not found a file it won't allow me to edit yet) and using the file manager in Super User mode, I went to the offending .xorg file in the root directory on my hard drive (usually /etc/X11) and edited the xorg.conf file using a text editor (in this case Kate). I merely deleted the changes made to the file to make compiz-fusion work which is what got me into the trouble in the first place. I re-booted and everything worked fine. There should be a backup file in that directory which you can use to make changes from as well.

I fired up SuSE to try and figure out what I do, this is what happens. When I type "/dev/sda3" into Konqueror, I can see my drive! But I can't open any files. It gives me the 'open with' box.
