Certainly start with slackware, why not?

I tend to run Fedora on laptops (easy install, and familiar to me).

I run gentoo on the home server; it gives the CPUs something to do (and
it is handy being able to change the compile options to include some
extra library and have everything rebuilt correctly).

I don't know enough about the other distros to offer much opinion.

For lightweight window managers I suggest FVWM or icewm. I run FVWM and
the GF runs IceWM. Like you, I mostly use the GUI to multiplex a lot of
terminal windows:-)
