Ah. Perhaps I was overly optimistic. Some options are listed here:
[/u/cameron]finola*255> compiz --help
Usage: compiz [--display DISPLAY] [--bg-image PNG] [--refresh-rate RATE]
[--fast-filter] [--direct-rendering] [--loose-binding] [--replace]
[--sm-disable] [--sm-client-id ID] [--no-detection] [--version]
[--use-root-window] [--help] [PLUGIN]...
Do any of the [--no-detection, --direct-rendering, --sm-disable,
--use-root-window have any effect on things - try each individually.
I'm not a compiz expert and don't run it myself because it's a window
manager, and I like FVWM. Instead, I run xcompmgr and use it to make
windows transparent and to do fade in/out. It would be interesting to
see if xcompmgr works for you even if compiz fails.
I run it thus:
xcompmgr -cfF -r0 -D5 -I0.01 -O0.02
myself.
Cheers,
