You might want to consider running Linux on a Desktop machine, as opposed to your laptop. If you run into a single, hardware-specific issue on a Desktop machine, you can simply swap out the problem part, for one that works. I build my own machines, so this is a solution I use whenever the need arises. I have a Gateway Solo 9300 laptop that I ran Red Hat on, and luckily, I encountered no problems. Now I am running OpenBSD 4.0 on it, again w/o any problems. I picked up a Zaurus SL-6000L PDA, which also runs a Linux that Sharp apparently developed expressly for the PDA. I did move from DOS/Windows to Linux/UNIX with a serious mind-set, though... I was pretty much a geek running those two OS's (C/C++, Apache, Perl, other fun stuff)... so there was never any question in my mind, whether or not I would continue running *nix, no matter what sort of issues I had to rectify. It took me a couple years for me to get up to speed, not a couple weeks. In my opinion, learning *nix was worth the effort. -- -wittig http://www.robertwittig.com/ http://robertwittig.net/ http://robertwittig.org/ .
