Good suggestion, but fortunately I was able to get my sound card on my
laptop to work by installing an older version of Ubuntu (i.e. 6.10).

Ah, yes, a true techi:-) I've installed DVD drives, hard drives,
memory, sound cards, modems, etc., but I wouldn't be able to build a
machine from scratch. On the other hand, there's a local computer
store that builds them, and they may be willing to tailor a product to
my specs. I was planning on having them build my next computer
anyway, just to get away from the irritating proprietary issues. My
HP Media Center is a proprietary nightmare, and it's built so that I
can't even install a larger hard drive without major dis-assembly. I
may never buy a name brand computer again.

I think it will be worth the effort in the end, and I'm going to try
not to let frustration overwhelm me!
