Hi Grant,
I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for that deal to happen,
if I were you! The fact is that many proprietary (i.e. paid-for)
software programs* can *be run under Linux using WINE -
go to http://www.winehq.org/ for details. I run Macromedia
Dreamweaver in this way under Linux Mint simply because
there isn't an open-source web-design software that
offers me the range of options that I have in Dreamweaver.
I have also run Photoshop in this way. Bear in mind that it's
not just Microsoft that owns .exe programs - there are many
thousands of software companies who offer proprietary
software in this format. These are all in business to make a
profit.
Open-source offers a huge choice of programs, many of which
are as good as, or better than, their paid-for equivalent.
Let me give you an analogy. I own a car and a bicycle. Wherever
possible, I prefer to use my bike for the many advantages that
it gives me - exercise, environmentally-friendly, free (once I own
the basic equipment), fresh air etc. To use my bike, I have to
invest some energy in it (turning the pedals!). If I decide that I
don't want to invest that energy so I'll add an engine and a cover,
it ceases to be a bike and loses many of the advantages of cycling.
There are times, however, when a bike just won't cut it (like
bringing home the weekly family shopping!). Then I can use my
car.
Linux is fundamentally different to Windows and requires a different
mindset and some effort to learn. Many people feel that the effort
is well worthwhile for the advantages Linux brings (free software,
freedom of choice, learning new skills etc.). However, just as I
understand why cycling is not for everybody, so I understand why
Linux will never suit everybody.
They are two different animals, so don't expect Linux to ever be a
Windows clone - it ain't gonna happen!
