My, Rob, you do bounce around a good bit, don't you?

In most Linux distributions today, multimedia support isn't much of a problem
on most hardware. These days, I simply install the VLC Media Player and it
handles nearly everything you're likely to throw at it.

As for security--as others have said, "security" is as much an attitude and a
set of habits as it is an operating system and applications. About any Linux
will be far ahead of Windows in that regard, but most also have plenty of
things you can do to harden them further. However, none of that will mean much
if you yourself engage in risky behavior.

Regarding bugs, *every* complex piece of software has bugs. If you're lucky,
they won't cause insurmountable problems. Personally, I'd stick with one of the
distributions based on Ubuntu, as they are well supported and are friendly to
new users asking questions they really should be able to find themselves quite
easily.
