The purpose of the demo-day (as I see it) is to demonstrate the power and
capabilities of linux, and to hopefully encourage others to use it. If you went
to a demo of a given operating system and saw someone showing off a file-manager
and a text editor, would you get excited?

What I'm planning -
For the people who need apps
Games - Quake (network playing), CIV:CTP
Apps - WP8, StarOffice, Netscape, Informix (web connectivity for
                        "registration"?)
                GNOME Desktop
        "crap that's cool!"
6-node 486 Beowulf running POVRAY, with explanations
dial-on-demand(!) internet server, with local apache (486)
Home automation using HEYU and a CM11A X-10 controller (486)
(these also show how its possible to re-use perfectly good machines
                        considered "outdated" by M$)
        Networking
Win95 client connecting to server via SAMBA for file/print services
Linux accessing NT and Netware services
                Trinux floppy-distro for testing/troubleshooting
        Misc
XCDRoast churning out copies of the latest RH cd's for media
cost only, with explanations and assurances that "Yes,
                        this IS legal!!! FREE SOFTWARE!!!"

Not every site has to be the same. You may have UG members who have particular
experience in an area that would be cool to show off (mine being the Home
Automation stuff above).

Now I realize there isn't much "cool" or exciting about the apps, but it will
satisfy the "If only I could do <fill in the blank> I'd switch (or at least try
it)..." bunch.

Also, maybe some kind of contest like "We dare you to find something you can do
with M$ products that can't be done on Linux", based on function and not
name-brand apps (I.E - there is no AutoCad for Linux that I know of, but there
are good CAD programs available that will read/write AC files).

Nice page...

Check out community centers in your area, if any. That's what I'm planning (I
teach computer classes for the ones in our area, and they rent a good-sized room
for $10/hr).

I think one person coordinating the web page and running the list is fine. If he
needs help with this, ask and I'm sure some of us would chip in. Most of the
actual work is going to have to be done at the local level. This list is great
because it will foster ideas between the different groups, and hopefully
establish the date of the actual Demo-Day. Maybe also a good place to post
pictures after the day from all the sites who participated. I'd like to see
that!

Too much, evidently! :)

Looked pretty good to me! :)

My question - anyone planning any newspaper/radio advertising? I've been told
that some agencies will provide free public service announcements, but haven't
investigated if promoting a non-profit event like this will qualify. I'm
guessing this would be at the discretion of the individual agencies, but anyone
else already tried contacting anyone in your area? Results?
