Soumya-

As a prelude to my message, I would like to say that in
order to demonstrate the power of linux, often there are
elements that are not directly linux-related which will
really make the impact.

> I have a 486DX4/16MB PC. I found Linux vastly superior
to WIN9x for my use.

While comparatively Linux probably performs better than
win9x on a 486, it is going to be hard to convince a real
power user or anyone using a more modern computer with
that as your demonstration computer.

I would highly suggest finding another computer, perhaps
in addition to the 486. Then you'll really be able to show
off the performance of multimedia on linux, and your older
machine can show that it is also usable on the low end.

I would strongly recommend BlackBox for a low-load wm that
still looks good. http://blackbox.wiw.org/

GQmpeg is a really cool looking mp3 player (gnome frontend
to mpg123). Or xmms for a good winamp clone.

GIMP is an excellent example of a high-quality open source
product.

Remember, if you are doing this on your 486, any
multimedia displays are going to be pretty limited.

I would also suggest that you pay close attention to the
quality of monitor and speakers you use. While these don't
really reflect on Linux, they are what potential users
will see and hear and be impressed by.

In the same line of thought, make sure your equipment is
clean. Don't bring your grimy keyboard you use everyday if
you can help it. Beg, borrow, don't steal, whatever cool
and clean looking devices you can from other people if you
don't have your own. Bright (appropriate) mousepad,
external ZIP drive, scroll mouse, whatever. If you can
find someone who is using linux on their Imac, get them to
bring it!

Later all,

Luke
