Melissa Lambourne of Caldera Systems has requested our mailing
address for the purposes of shipping out their companies contributions for
Linux Demo Day .
This raises an issue . I know that it must be hell trying to get all
of the addresses of all of the LUGs but it must also be difficult if for the
sponsors to mail everyhting out within a matter of weeks . Many of these
people are alone in their company ( Melissa Lambourne is required to
coordinate Calderas LUGs already ) with regards to coordinating their
companies support for Linux groups and activities . I wonder if it is a
reasonable suggestion to send off a partial list of the LUGs that have
supplied addresses and let the companies decide whether they would like to
begin shipping with a partial list or wait for a complete list . I am
suggesting that we keep them updated .

This is the first year that this has ever been tried and we are all still
learning something about how this is done . Here are acouple of things we
may keep in mind next year :

---- make a mailing address a required field on the sign up page for LUGs (
LUGs that don't want stuff can put in a nonsensical address ) .
This should have a privacy statement right next to it assuring them of the
use of the addresses gained . Perhaps there must be an aggreement with the
sponsors that also protects the participating LUG's address from being
misused .

---- A single Day for LDD will help make this an international event ( for
the purposes of attracting media hype ) . I liked John Hibb's proposal quite
abit . Hibbs and the Global Learn Day used a moving time frame where the
"spotlight" moved with the sun as runded the earth . It may be impractical
but it would be a good thing to talk about in preparation for next year .
Emphasizing that the Linux community is an international one doesn't hurt
one iota .

Should we start a list of the things that we have learned from our first
event ? I know that I will not remember all of the things that PALE learned
when next year rolls around . How about getting a LUG LDD How-to under
developement shortly after the big day . I say after the big day because
there will inevitably be lessons learned that can only be learned that day (
LDD coordinators should almost certainly keep their own notes as their
experiences and lessons will be significantly different than that of the
local LUGs ) .
