In my experience, (1) no hardware debugging is needed if you're using a
PCI ethernet card, and (2) with ISA cards, Int 10 and I/O 300h are a
safe choice nine times out of ten. Otherwise, boot a DOS floppy and run
the NIC's config/test utility. It's staggeringly rare for Int5 / I/O
280h also not to work.
I therefore just leave my spare ISA NICs preconfigured for 10/300, and
they almost always work in people's machines with no fiddling.
Besides, it's NOT just the speed of network installation that's so
compelling! Network-delivered services and information (along with
user education) are specifically key to holding a good, successful
InstallFest -- in my view.

<grin> I get more comments on that "rant" essay than any other -- and,
to my astonishment I found it linked to from the main winmodem
information site, http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html.
