Hey seshan,

First do this

1] Install the sendmail sources
2] Read $INSTALL_DIR/cf/README

And then let me know if any other document is needed..

The problem with linuxland is that people want quick fix solutions. MAN
pages were provided for a reason. HOW-To's are okay for vendor specific
problems like the sis card etc. But thats the limit. You can't HOW-To a
calculus course....

Considering the layman aspect. You have to agree that anybody who uses
linux and is considering using pine/ or any other cleint/ which itself is
not the MTA has to understand that he is in for a li'l bit of
complications.

Now it is absolutely ridiculous to say that df/dt (its calulus) is too
complicated for me hence i will not do it. There are trade-off's involved
when designing software and sendmail has opted for making it more
customisable than easy to understand. If you don't want to use sendmail
becoz you think its the most f***ed up software on the planet, fine, But
just becouse its complicated? jeeeeeeeeeeesus.

> is rather complicated. Give the book to a newbie and I sure he learn

Sorry to say dude , but any mailer including qmail can't do that. It's not
sendmail's problem that *the user* can't understand simple things and does
not have a brain. As far as the aspect that newbies will find it
difficult, its up to the distro vendor to provide the requiried interface
etc for configuring sendmail. I've seen some GUI config tools for
sendmail on freshmeat.Since we are on the subject qmail doesn't have these
scripts either. Sammer will agree that it took him some time to set up
qmail (even though he thinks that it was easy).

> Simple things like does sendmail require a DNS server locally, how is to

NO it DOES NOT.
1] use delivery mode = expensive in sendmail.cf
2] use FEATURE('accept_unqualified_senders') in sendmail.mc
3] use FEATURE('accept_unreslovable_domains') in sendmail.mc

I use this at home and it works.

> role in using sendmail. what the file under etc/mail directory used

> "off-the-shelf".

Now You are Oh so talking of your hat dude , EVERYTHING is explained in
the documentation which comes with the sources.

> Note: This is just my opinion, flame only if required...

Your problem was that I said that HOW-To's suck. Don't make this a
sendmail issue.

Good /roubust/ programs are often complicated. Chucking functionlity for
ease of interface is oh so wrong. If this is what is going to happen to
linux better rename it to Windows.

Another aspect of the linux movement is to "educate" the user. If we don't
have educated users , the development cycle will die. Just getting to know
how do stuff rather than understanding how exactly the stuff works is a
*very* bad idea. HOW-to's are doing this. You know that to set up a modem
you have to do such and such and steps. But why do them in the first
place? These are the things documented in the manuals which users should
read and understand.
