--An alternative worthy of consideration would be to use the Linuxant
drivers. They are not free, but they are a breeze to install.

ndiswrapper is a breeze to install too. I think the reason to be excited about this new project is the prospect of actual Linux drivers for these devices instead of using wrapper programs to use Windows drivers. With real drivers you can use the device to its full extent. At this time the bcm43xx drivers are not very useful but judging from the development mailing list they are making good progress so I will be keeping a close eye on this project.
