Along those lines, you could carry a Mepis liveCd with
you. It is the one distro I've found that includes
ndiswrapper and is able to auto-detect the Broadcom in
my hp pavilion zv5000. (broadcom 4309, i believe)

just pop it in and boot it, should be able to connect
without any real work. And no extra OS's installed,
but it's not a bad idea anyway.

SimplyMepis 3.3.1 and 3.3.2Test03 both are able to
find my broadcom.
