the ndiswrapper checks for compatible gcc versions based on the kernel I
think.

If I had to guess, I'd say that your kernel was compiled with gcc 3.4
and the rest of the system may have been compiled with a different gcc
version.  I had this happen in debian and wouldnt surprise me if ubuntu
does it too.
