You might reconsider that it could be a physical thing. I had a notebook where the jack end of the power cord was too flimsy and it ended up shorting out internally. The symptom was that the power would go in and out as I jiggled the connecter to get a reliable connection. I fixed it by cutting off the jack and resoldering it (a very easy job).
