The problem might also be the actual connector inside the laptop - not
the power cord. On my R3140us, I started having the same kind of
symptoms. The cord didn't seem too loose, but I removed the casing
over that corner of the motherboard, and found that the internal
connection between the motherboard and the jack had come loose. It
wasn't entirely broken, but it was loose enough to not keep a steady
power connection. I ended up sending the thing back to HP (still under
warranty), and they just replaced the entire motherboard.

If yours is out of warranty, and this is the case, you might be able
to solder the connector back on. It seems to be a design problem with
most Compaq and HP laptops (go figure), and pretty common. Here's a

Apparently this has happened to some people multiple times, resulting
in the same repair job over and over again, unfortunately. Due to the
design, any significant torque on the plug will break the internal
connector eventually.
