What is "Gnome Screen Resolution switcher" ?
Do you mean gnome-control-center->Screen resolution->Screen resolution
preferences ?

Because if this is the case, it does not help me. I can reduce the
resolution to 800x600, but Im unable to switch to the internal monitor.

So If you dont use the Fn key, how can you switch between the external
and the internal monitor?

In my case, it does not work If I do this:
1. I launch the X server with the external monitor plugged in, I use my
notebook with my external monitor.

2. I reduce the resolution to 800x600 (using Screen resolution
preferences)

3. I switch using Fn-F4 key. My laptop is still blank.

If I unplug the external monitor, it does not help either.

So Im curious how do you do it. It is really a PITA to restart the X if
I need to mobilize my laptop.
