Surprised you used 8.10 rather than 8.04-LTS.
At the office we are sticking with LTS for the foreseeable future,
tho at home we have 8.10; both work fine.

Probably easier to run Kalarm given you're already familiar.
Shouldnt be any problem, assuming you have the dependencies installed
(i'd assume you'd use the pkg manager) and you have enough memory.
I run apps for both GNOME & KDE under FVWM, no problem.

Again, it's really up to you - if you like Kmail there shouldnt be any
problem running it with GNOME, FVWM, IceWM, whatever.  If you like you
could certainly do a search as to whether your key feature is supported
in Thunderbird - if not in the core, maybe in an extension.
