I don't know if this still stands true, but for a software RAID array you have to have a small boot partition separate, like 100M or so, to hold the kernel and boot files, since GRUB doesn't "understand" software raid. I've always had separate boot partitions, never had a problem with it. Makes it easier on kernel updates too.
I don't really remember if the alternate installation came with LILO or GRUB, but my memory recalls having GRUB as the bootloader...
