Honestly, Apple, Oracle, Microsoft and all the big boys have been "taking Linux seriously" for the past decade.
Apple can't penetrate the server market - no matter how hard they try. Although they dont use the linux kernel per se, they do understand the advantages of leveraging and releasing open source components (WebKit anyone?) Microsoft categorizes all their market reports in the following categories: 1)Google, 2)Apple, 3)Linux/Opensource, 4)other. That should tell you a lot about their view of the competing world. Oracle is all about running their stuff on Linux. Although every single one of these companies is "propietary" in nature, believe me when I tell you that everyone takes Linux seriously. That whole idea of being a crappy hobby basement project was left in the 90s and everyone takes it seriously.
