This seems odd, but you should use a little ingenuity and install the
older packages on the newer system if you don't want the build the
programs from source(which might fix the issue) add the previous release
to your repo and install compiz from there.

I get nothing but a box of lines.Same with Gnome Do.If I install

As far as I know...9.10 doesn't use a detail xorg.conf either. X has
gotten so smart that you don't need modelines and such BUT you can still
specify them and X will use anything you put in that file.
dpkg-reconfigure xserv-xorg won't do much anymore, so you have to do a
little more research.

I don't think your video card is too old, there might just be something
in the build(bug/quirk) that keeps your system from working as usual. If
it worked before and not now; that's all it could be.

So for now I am back to using Windows 7 on my laptop
:(
and I still

I don't think there's any such thing as a Linux version of Windows
Vista. Visually I think it's vice versus...Windows is "looking" a lot
more like Linux nowadays. Composite effects weren't available on Windows
until Vista released...we had it on Linux some 3-4 yeara earlier. Ubuntu
does a lot of things for you, but there does come a point where you have
to "Learn Linux" to ensure things stay working. Ubuntu is building a
huge base of users, but these users expect things to work because they
recently migrated from Windows. When things don't you revert to what
did. Sweat a little(a little more even) and pop the hood on that
thing...you'll get it to work if you just keep digging.
