Linux may have issues with some hardware, but have you ever tried to install Windows from CD (not a system restore CD)? I would say that 99% of the hardware works under Ubuntu "out of the box". I have yet to see a computer (accessories excluded like printers) not work from the first boot under Ubuntu.
